Show Dog Training
How does training of show dogs differ from training of dogs generally?
The answer to that is easy. There is no difference. We want a well educated companion who is happy, fit and well socialised and that of course applies to all dogs.
Training starts when the puppy leaves its mother and we begin with getting the puppy to look to us as the most important thing in its world. We look to get the puppy following us happily even before putting a lead on.
When the lead is on we look to keep the puppy engaged with us and walking calmly on a loose lead. One difference I make at this point is I never ask a potential show dog to sit when I stop. The Reason for that is when in the ring we want the default position to be stand not sit. After the stand becomes the default position then of course we can then teach the sit position.
So you can see at the puppy stage all training is exactly the same.
